It’s here: cold and flu season. And, with it comes cough syrup and medicines, all of which can cause stains on clothing and furniture. Our expert cleaning team put together some tips they’ve tried personally to help you avoid permanent damage.
Clothing
The best option is to bring the garment to Flair Cleaners for treatment and to show us the stain. If you prefer trying to remove the stain at home, follow these tips.
- Rinse in warm water to dilute the stain.
- Mix 1 tablespoon liquid laundry detergent and 1 tablespoon white vinegar with 2 cups cool water.
- Sponge the stain with the mixture; do not rub. Tamp with a brush or spoon. Rinse with water.
- Pretreat with a stain remover. Wash.
Upholstery
Professionally clean upholstery for best results. Or, to try cleaning it yourself, follow these steps.
- Repeat step 2 and 3 above.
- Sponge with water (do not rub). Blot until all the liquid is absorbed. Blot dry.
- If the stain persists, mix 1 teaspoon of oxygen or non-chlorine bleach with 1 tablespoon of water. Test this on an area of the furniture that will not show if discoloration occurs.
- Apply with an eye dropper. Blot with a sponge until the liquid is absorbed. Blot dry.
