Jeans can be a costly investment – and finding a great-fitting pair can feel like an achievement. So you want your favorite jeans to last and look their best for as long as possible. The best approach is to have your jeans dry cleaned and professionally pressed. If you prefer caring for them at home, consider this advice.
- Wash Jeans Less Frequently – Jeans conform to our bodies, and denim can take up to six months to break in. When jeans are washed, most of the shape is lost. So, in general, if jeans aren’t visibly dirty, keep on wearing them.
- Turn Jeans Inside-Out Before Washing – Always turn jeans inside out before tossing them in the washing machine. This helps reduce fabric bleeding and cuts down on friction to the “face” (aka the outside) of the jeans fabric.
- Hang Jeans to Dry – A pair of jean’s worst enemy is a clothes dryer. Never use one to dry your jeans, if you want to avoid fading, shrinking and unwanted distressing. Hanging jeans to dry is easy on the fabric, reduces wrinkles and helps your jeans maintain their proper fit.
TV news research in Denver, Colorado, proved that jeans dry cleaned with environmentally safe processes like Flair’s GreenEarth, “looked as good as they did on day one only softer. The pairs that were washed looked older and lost color.” They concluded that “if you wash jeans, they need to be your cheap pair. The jeans you want to keep for a long time and keep looking good should be dry cleaned by a professional dry cleaner.”
