Tim Gunn, Chief Creative Officer for Liz Claiborne and fashion mentor for Project Runway, was asked what he thought was the number one fashion sin of all time. Mr. Gunn hesitated at first and then responded that there were actually two sins in competition with each other that most people commit.
“One is fit. Wearing clothes that are simply too big or too small, and the former is much more prevalent.”
“The other really is clothing maintenance. It’s just not taking care of what we have. And in some ways, that for me is probably the bigger crime. Because when you have something new and I don’t even care how much it really cost-it doesn’t matter. In fact, the less expensive it costs, the better care you should take of it because it won’t be as high end a textile and the construction will not be as long term as far as how long it will last. So it’s about taking care of what we have responsibly.”
“So, taking proper care of what we own and fit – the biggest sins. Silhouette, proportion and fit are the keys to getting our fashion right. When I see a lot of people walking around in clothes that are just voluminous and they don’t really think there’s a problem. But there is.”
